VBAC - The aftermath

by Whitney

Hi. I am here. I am reading, I am just not writing. I just had a baby, you see. Eight days ago. I am not fit to blog right now. I am probably injuring myself just sitting in this computer chair. My sitting parts hurt. A lot. Second baby, but first time out the chute — turns out it’s more like a first baby.

So, let me just excuse myself for a few more days. I really thought I’d be out and about by now, but I just can’t do it.

I don’t mind feeling like I might cry at any moment. I don’t mind the cracked nipples. I don’t mind the insane rash on my back from the epidural. What’s bothering me is right between my legs. I have third degree rippage. I can only sit on pillows, and prefer those that are shaped like a donut. When will this feel better? Tell us, how long did it take you to get moving?

oh ouch. motrin motrin motrin
oh and they gave me this hose, squirty thing that I could hook up to the sink and turn on the warm water. That helped a ton along with my Earth Mama Angel Baby New Mama Bottom Spray.
Hang in there!

So sorry. I’m 6 weeks postpartum with my second. This time it was only 2nd degree so I’m feeling great! (It’s all relative). Take it as easy as you can, first of all. I know, I know, I also have a 2.75 year old. Ibuprofen alternating with Tylenol. Did they give you Dermoplast spray in the hospital? You can get it at any pharmacy/drugstore over the counter. It’s what your parents might have sprayed on your skinned knee. Use that like it’s going out of style. And that squirt bottle for cleaning filled with warm water can also be relieving. Don’t assess the situation no matter what. I made that mistake this time. DON’T LOOK! Put that mirror away, it just doubles the pain. Don’t ask about when it gets better. It does get better each and every day BUT … it can be gradual. When I had 3rd degree ouchies I took Colace stool softener for months. Mostly because I was scared, not because I really had a problem. I was just worried that I would. Milk of Magnesia for when you do really have a problem. Congrats on the VBAC, that’s awesome. I always feel for you guys though, I have a friend who is also paying the “first time out of the chute” price with a new baby (her kids are the same age as mine). Just take it easy, the more you do, the more it hurts! With my first I wanted to get out but couldn’t. It was 2 weeks before I left the house (taking Vicodin to get me moving) and 3 weeks before I left without my husband. This time it was much easier to leave the house as long as I could ignore the embarrassment of limping spread eagle so everyone in the world could know where I was hurting and swollen. Take care, congrats and good luck from a mama in Portland.

yowza! i only tore first degree and i was laid up for a week i cant even imagine third degree! something that helped was freezing pads and wearing them around, standing helped cause well i wasnt sitting on the sore parts! and the squirt bottle/dermaplast routine after every toileting hleped too. but dont worry it will get better, and then the pain will return when you walk alot but that will go away too…. good luck and happy healing!

ooh, poor thing!

I had a 3rd deg. episiotomy, so somewhat similar. Not happy to say that it was about 6 weeks before I felt sitting without the donut to be no biggy. And that’s not to say I felt all better then, either. The numbing spray you should have received is a lifesaver. Sitz baths. Cold or warm compresses.

If you didn’t get the spray, call your doc and ask for a prescription–it’s worth it.

You poor thing. That’s really the pits. I can say that (at least for me with my 4th degree tear) I felt lots better after about 8 weeks. Then a little while after that the actuall nerves started to heal or something that there was a relapse in the pain. It made using a sling downright difficult. Hang in there, it can’t get worse. Use squirt bottle with warm water helps, along with a stool softener and that pain relieving spray. When it was really bad I’d just lay there with bag of ice between my legs. Good luck and take it easy.
