Life imitating “art” for earth day
by Heather
In honor of Earth Day/Weekend/Month, we’ve been trying to ride our bikes more as transportation. Since Milo’s birthday, we use the bike trailer to take the boys to school most days already, so we’re just amping it up and riding more for errands and what not.
For example, on Saturday, we took Milo and Holden to the Berkeley Earth Day festival via bike trailer… we were not the only ones. It was a very earthy thing to do.
On Sunday, for my own naptime siesta, I biked to my pedicure appointment and then to the mall. I was laughing all the way on my cruiser because the whole thing seemed so funny (look world! I’m on a bike instead of a car! check me out!).
Yesterday, during my lunchtime, I biked my errands to Target rather than driving.
So, while I feel so proud and green and think, “What a good girl am I,” I also gotta ask, “Can I drive again yet?!” My quads are tired and I have helmet head.

We’re also thinking of getting a bike trailer to help make our bikes our main form of transportation. Can I ask how big baby needs to be to fit safely in the bike trailer? The guys at the local bike shop don’t know these kind of important details.

Vim wants to get one of those for Jack but I’m nervous about it. Oakland drivers… they run red lights… even next to elementary schools. it makes me nervous.

Robin, check with your pediatrician about how old a baby should be… I’m pretty sure they say over 12 months (with very good head control) but we’ve both done it as young as about 111/2 months.
Minnie, I know it’s pretty scary. Especially at first. I tend to stick to wide roads and if I get scared, I go slow on the sidewalk. Berkeley has some “bike boulevards” which make me feel pretty good.
Also, many people prefer the bike seat that you attach directly to your bike. I’ve heard pros and cons for both trailers and extra seats, but you should do what you’re most comfortable with.

We intend to get a bike trailer soon, but I’m in Oakland like Minnie and we’ve almost been hit several times just trying to use the crosswalk when we had the green light (and the right of way). Does the bright orange flag help with letting people know you’re there and are there other things you can do to make your presence known?
Which bike trailers are people’s favorites?

You may have helmet hair but I think that rocks! I’m trying to get my hubbie to buy me a beach cruiser with a basket on the front…We’ll see if my hints paid off for mother’s day. I love to see other mom’s getting their kids out. Take a peek at my site. It’s all about playing outside with kiddos!
